FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Papillion, NE — On November 5, 2024, the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) and the Papillion Police Department (PPD) utilized advanced drone technology to peacefully resolve a critical incident. Their combined efforts highlight the power of modern technology and inter-agency collaboration, leading to a safe de-escalation.
Incident Overview
A Sarpy County Sheriff's Office deputy discovered an unoccupied vehicle on the side of the road. Inside, officers found a box of shotgun shells and a cell phone. The vehicle was registered to a 90-year-old male, raising concerns. Recognizing the potential risk, the deputy called for SCSO drone team support.
The team deployed an Autel Max 4T drone, using thermal imaging to detect a human-shaped heat signature in a nearby field.
Switching to the variable zoom camera, officers identified a man, appearing to be in his 50s, armed with a shotgun and attempting to hide in the brush. This observation, combined with property records confirming no one had permission to be on the land and multiple failed attempts to communicate using the drone's speaker, played a critical role in shaping the officers' decision-making process.
Tactical Innovation
Faced with multiple factors — the abandoned vehicle, shotgun shells, and lack of response — officers believed the individual might be in a mental health crisis. Instead of deploying a SWAT team, the drone team pursued a safer approach.
Sergeant Barrall and the drone team attached a cell phone to the Autel Max 4T’s payload delivery system. Papillion PD Detective Moeller expertly piloted the drone and dropped the phone directly into the individual's lap. Officers called the phone, and the individual answered.
Through strategic de-escalation, the person in question walked toward officers with his hands raised, leading to a peaceful resolution. He was released to his family, who agreed to follow up with his primary care physician for a mental health evaluation.
Technology-Driven Results
This event illustrates how drones are transforming modern law enforcement. Thermal imaging, infrared tracking, and payload delivery allow officers to assess and act decisively with minimal risk.
